The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Championship, presented by the Optimum Group at Sun City, saw an increase in entries last year and this year’s edition is set to take yet another leap forward in participant totals.
“The uptake on entries has already been amazing. We are really humbled that the event continues to attract such a big field,” said race organiser, Mauritz Meyer.
“The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA is a destination event and there is such a unique camaraderie and atmosphere with everyone gathering at Sun City once a year to focus on cancer awareness. It’s incredible to think that this year will be the 22nd edition of this special event.
“Our event partners remain with us year after year and we can’t thank them enough. 2019 constitutes the seventh year of our partnership with Bestmed as title sponsor while PowerAde and Sun City have supported the race since its inception.
“Our presenting partner, the Optimum Group, are now in their fourth year and have continued to increase their footprint and involvement. These entities, as well as all our other supplier partners, are amazing. They feel more like family than sponsors,” said Meyer.
“This is a very special race and it’s close to the heart of every person in the organising committee. Except for a few individuals, we’ve all been together doing this for 22 years.
“Thanks so much to all the cyclists who have supported the event for so many years. We love you guys!” concluded Meyer, who is also the founder of the Tshwane Classic, presented by Jacaranda FM.
The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Championship received a welcome injection in 2016 when the road race was able to return to its original route which once saw the event attract 8000 riders.
The move was made possible by presenting the road race on the Sunday instead of the Saturday during the weekend cycling festival.
This saw the entrant numbers for the road race increase while it also saw a bigger uptake on the mountain bike leg of proceedings, which moved to the popular Saturday slot.
Sun City have put together special accommodation packages for the Friday and Saturday evening over race weekend which include breakfast. More info on this is available on www.cansalostcity.co.za
The Road Classic offers distances of 103km and 70km and takes place on Sunday, 25 August. The MTB Classic, which presents 25km and 50km route options, fills the Saturday slot (24 August) over the weekend cycling festival.
The road race route is fast and flat and has received stunning feedback following the return to the traditional route in 2016. Because it now takes place on a Sunday, the roads are quiet and perfectly suited to present a mass participation race in safe surroundings.
The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Road Championship is a premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Entries are limited to 4000 for the road race and 1500 for the mountain-bike event.

The casino resort offers convenient and safe parking as well as a variety of family entertainment options once the racing is done, including free entry into the Valley of Waves.
